Telegraph Review August 2013

Fiona Duncan, Telegraph Travel's hotel expert, reviews the best and worst of Britain's hotels and bed and breakfasts, from boutique to budget, countryside to city centre.

Easby Hall, a classic stone-built Georgian house with substantial 19th-century additions, stands on a country lane outside Richmond. First impressions are of a calm, well-proportioned and stylish home, recently renovated and redecorated. No doubt, I thought, stepping inside, it has a pretty garden too.
Indeed it does: three, to be precise, all immaculate, abundant, harmonious and, so they tell me, chemical-free. One even has a stone-walled “party hut”, complete with fireplace and banquettes. The extensive kitchen garden is a tour de force, with much companion planting and not a weed in sight.
The gardens, however, are but a sideshow. Stroll into the elegant drawing room, with its huge casement windows, and you will stop dead in your tracks, for beyond and below the cleverly designed “infinity lawn” lie the tranquil, romantic ruins of Easby Abbey, surrounded by gently rolling wood and sheep-flecked meadows. You might have heard of, and possibly visited, Yorkshire’s Fountains, Rievaulx  and Jervaulx  abbey ruins, but Easby? Here they are, on the banks of the River Swale, along with the little parish church of St Agatha, which is still in use. Couples marry in St Agatha and walk to Easby Hall for their reception: how divine.
